The Gibraltar National Museum is delighted to announce that its annual Open Day will take place on Saturday 16th May 2026, from 10:00 to 18:00, as part of the global celebrations for International Museum Day. This year's theme, "Museums Uniting a Divided World", set by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), reflects the important role museums play in fostering dialogue, understanding, and cohesion across communities.

International Museum Day has been celebrated in Gibraltar since 2002, and this year marks the 25th anniversary of the event locally.

Visitors can look forward to a varied programme of activities designed to engage all ages, with a particular focus on children. Throughout the day, museum staff will be available to interact with visitors and share insights into Gibraltar’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

A range of popular activities will once again be on offer, including face painting, crafts, hands-on workshops, and the much-anticipated treasure hunts. Children who successfully complete the treasure hunts will be entered into a prize draw following the event.

Admission to the Gibraltar National Museum at Bomb House Lane will be free throughout the day, and the Natural History Museum at Parson’s Lodge will also offer free entry between 10:00 and 14:00. The public is warmly invited to attend and enjoy a day of discovery, creativity, and learning.

We are very pleased to once again welcome the community to our annual Open Day in celebration of International Museum Day,” said Prof Clive Finlayson, Director of the Gibraltar National Museum. “At a time when societies can feel increasingly divided, museums provide spaces for connection and shared understanding, and we look forward to engaging with visitors throughout the day.”
