Stay Behind Cave

Delve into the hidden history of Gibraltar with a guided tour of this top-secret underground facility designed for 'Operation Tracer' during World War II. Located in the heart of the Rock of Gibraltar, this labyrinthine network of excavated tunnels and chambers was designed to house a small team of soldiers who would remain behind enemy lines in the event of an invasion by the Axis powers. Classified official documents about the operation were sealed for decades, until the site was discovered by caves in 1997. Now, led by one of our expert tour guides, you can experience this fascinating site firsthand and learn about the ingenious methods used to conceal it from enemy detection. As you wander through the maze of tunnels and underground rooms, you will gain a unique perspective on Gibraltar's wartime history and a deep appreciation for the bravery of the soldiers who were committed to this cause.

Please note that tours of Stay Behind Cave are subject to a strict annual quota of 30 visitors. There is a waiting list and tours are arranged on a first-come, first-served basis. They are available year-round Mondays to Fridays (weather permitting) with prior arrangement and are usually in the afternoon. Groups are limited to no more than 5 people.
