Notes from our Archive Police

On this day (15th May) back in 1874, a Deputation from the Exchange Committee, accompanied by the Police Magistrate, waited upon His Excellency the Governor in connection with the subject of robberies and the state of the Police regulations generally and asked that further steps might be taken for the security of the town by night. His Excellency informed the
Deputation that he would take the subject into consideration.

Subsequently His Excellency the Governor approved a scheme for the more extended employment of Police and the Force was increased by six men.
