The Gibraltar National Museum is inviting applications from volunteers to take part in this year’s archaeological excavations at the Gorham’s Cave Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of outstanding importance.
Each summer, our team undertakes carefully controlled excavations within the cave complex, contributing to ongoing research into Neanderthal occupation in Gibraltar. Volunteers play an important role in supporting this work while gaining hands-on experience in field archaeology within a unique and internationally significant site.
Volunteers will assist with a range of archaeological and logistical tasks under the supervision of experienced staff. These typically include:
Excavation using standard archaeological techniques
Sediment processing and sieving
Surveying and site recording
Finds handling and basic post-excavation work
General site support and day-to-day operational tasks as required
No prior archaeological experience is required, although an interest in archaeology, human evolution, or natural history is essential.
We welcome applications from:
Students and early-career researchers
Individuals with an interest in archaeology or heritage
Members of the public seeking practical field experience
Applicants should be motivated, reliable, and able to work as part of a team in outdoor conditions.
The 2026 excavation season will run from 6–24 July 2026.
We ask for a minimum commitment of two full weeks, although preference will be given to applicants who are able to participate for the entire three-week season.
Successful candidates travelling from abroad must plan to arrive in Gibraltar no later than 5 July and depart on 25 July 2026.
Limited shared, mixed dormitory accommodation is available at our field centre for volunteers travelling from abroad.
Meals will be provided free of charge for volunteers from abroad.
Transport between the field centre and the excavation site will be provided
To apply, please send:
A short CV
A brief statement of interest
Places are limited and typically fill quickly, so early application is strongly recommended.
Interviews may be requested as part of the selection process.
This is a voluntary opportunity and is unpaid
Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from Gibraltar
Further details, including daily schedules and requirements, will be provided to successful applicants
Join us this summer and contribute directly to research at one of Europe’s most important prehistoric sites!
